IPTV guide
Your internet box already offers TV. So why consider a separate IPTV service? Both solutions rely on the same technology, but they do not meet the same needs. This comparison looks at price, content, quality and ease of use, then helps you choose based on how you watch.
Your provider’s TV is “managed” IPTV: it travels over your internet provider’s private network to the set-top box. An independent IPTV service, such as Vepix TV, goes over the public internet and is used with an app, on the device of your choice. For the basics, see IPTV: what is it and how does it work?
Provider TV is often included in an internet plan, but not always for free: some plans charge for renting the set-top box, and extra packages are added every month. The real cost therefore depends on your plan and the options you choose.
An independent IPTV service is paid separately. At Vepix TV, the total price is known in advance: from €20 for 3 months to €90 for 24 months, or €3.75 a month, with no automatic renewal.
To compare, add up what TV really costs you today over a year (set-top box, options, packages) and set it against what you actually watch.
Provider boxes give access to free terrestrial channels, a basic package that varies by provider, and optional paid packages. They also include catch-up apps and often video-on-demand platforms.
An independent IPTV service offers its own catalogue, defined by the rights it has acquired. Compare catalogues on what matters to you, rather than on the number of channels advertised. And be wary of offers promising everything for almost nothing: our article Legal or illegal IPTV in France explains why.
This is the box’s main advantage: the stream travels over the provider’s network, with reserved bandwidth. The picture generally stays stable, even when other devices in the household are using the internet.
An independent IPTV service depends on your connection all the way to the device. With fibre or good VDSL and a well-connected device, HD and 4K are perfectly comfortable. With a tight connection, you will sometimes need to lower the quality. Check your speed with our guide What internet speed for IPTV?
With a provider box, the equipment is supplied: a set-top box connected to the TV, sometimes rented monthly. With an independent IPTV service, you use what you already have: a recent Smart TV, a stick or box such as the Fire TV Stick or an Android TV box, a smartphone or a computer. If your TV is old, an entry-level streaming stick is enough to make it compatible. Just check that the device is recent enough to receive app updates.
Your provider’s TV or terrestrial TV is probably enough. An IPTV service will only add value if its catalogue interests you.
Independent IPTV is more flexible: one subscription for the living-room Smart TV, your smartphone on the go or your computer. For two screens at the same time, see the 12-month 2-screen subscription.
An independent service saves you from reconfiguring your TV every time you change box, and works even with an internet plan without a TV option.
Provider TV, on a managed network, will be more stable. If you choose IPTV, prefer HD and a wired connection.
Yes, and it is common. Nothing stops you from keeping your provider’s TV for free channels on the main TV and using an IPTV service for its catalogue or to watch on other devices. Start with a short plan to test it on your setup.
A provider box offers the simplicity and stability of a managed network, but stays tied to your provider. Independent IPTV offers freedom of device and provider, provided you have a sufficient connection and choose a legal offer.
