IPTV buffering or freezing: the fixes

The picture freezes, the sound carries on without the picture, or a wheel spins in the middle of the screen: interruptions are the most common annoyance with IPTV. In the vast majority of cases, the cause is at your end and can be fixed in a few minutes. Here are the checks to make, from the simplest to the most advanced.

IPTV buffering or freezing: the fixes

Understanding where interruptions come from

An IPTV programme arrives in small chunks, stored for a few seconds in the app’s buffer before being displayed. When data arrives more slowly than it is played, the buffer empties and the picture stops while it refills: this is “buffering”.

The causes fall into four groups: the internet connection, the device, the app and its settings. The solutions below deal with them in that order.

1. Check your internet connection

This is the most common cause. Measure your speed on the device you watch on, when the interruptions happen. For smooth playback, you need about 10 Mbps of stable speed in HD and 25 Mbps in 4K. Our guide What internet speed for IPTV? explains how to run a reliable test.

  • If the device is on Wi-Fi, connect it to your router’s 5 GHz network or, better still, plug in an Ethernet cable.
  • Pause downloads, updates and other videos playing in the household.
  • If you use a VPN, turn it off while you test: it adds a detour that can reduce speed and increase latency.

2. Restart the device and the router

It sounds too simple, but it works. Internet routers and streaming devices often run for weeks without a restart, and their memory ends up saturated.

  1. Turn off your TV or box.
  2. Unplug your internet router for 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  3. Wait until the connection is restored (steady lights), then turn the device back on.
  4. Restart the app and test the same programme.

3. Free up space on the device

Entry-level sticks and boxes have little memory. When it is full, video playback suffers.

  • Close apps running in the background.
  • Clear the IPTV app’s cache from the device settings (Settings, Apps, your app, Clear cache). On Android TV and Fire TV Stick, the option is in app management.
  • Uninstall apps you no longer use.
  • Install any pending system updates.

4. Update or change your app

An outdated app may handle some streams poorly. Check the app store for an available update. If the interruptions only happen in one app while other videos (YouTube, catch-up) play smoothly, try another IPTV player app compatible with your login format, M3U or Xtream Codes (see M3U link or Xtream Codes: what’s the difference?).

5. Adjust the buffer and the quality

Most IPTV apps let you adjust the buffer size and playback quality.

  • Increase the buffer: a bigger buffer delays the start by one or two seconds, but absorbs speed drops better.
  • Lower the quality: switching from 4K to HD cuts the speed you need by two or three times, often with no visible difference on a medium-sized TV.
  • Change the video decoder: some apps offer “hardware” or “software” decoding. If the picture stutters on a less powerful device, try the other option.

6. Check the number of screens

Each subscription allows a set number of simultaneous screens. If someone else is watching with the same login details while you are, the connection may be refused or cut. Vepix TV’s 3, 6, 12 and 24-month plans include 1 screen; to watch on two screens at the same time, you need the 12-month 2-screen subscription.

One programme or all of them?

Before changing everything, look at where the interruptions happen. This simple observation points to the right cause.

  • All programmes cut out, on one device: the cause is probably the device, its Wi-Fi connection or the app. Test on another device on the same network.
  • All programmes cut out, on every device: the household’s internet connection is to blame. Measure the speed and restart the router.
  • Only one programme cuts out, everywhere: the problem probably comes from that particular stream. Wait a few minutes, try another quality, then report it to support if it persists.
  • Interruptions always happen at the same time: the network is saturated at peak times, at your home or at your internet provider. Lowering the quality at those times often solves the problem.

When to contact support

If you have made these checks and the interruptions continue, contact support. To get a quick answer, tell us:

  • your order number;
  • the device and app you are using;
  • the result of your speed test on that device;
  • the programme concerned and when the interruptions happen;
  • whether the problem affects all programmes or just one.

Answers to common questions are also in our FAQ.

In short

IPTV interruptions usually come from the connection or the device. Test your speed, switch to Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi, restart the router, clear the cache, update the app, then adjust the buffer and the quality. If nothing works, support takes over.
